A nice home studio with speedlites, part 2

Settings

In portrets with the use of flashes of speedlites, it is customary to do all settings manually. For the mearusing of the flash intensity a flash meter can be used, but with a few test flashes this can also be established by trial and error. Focussing is mainly done automatically, measured on the eyes.

Whe manually?

o   The results are far more consistent. The measurement of the camera can change due to changes in the color of the clothing, or more or less skin in the picture. Also, changes in background and the amount of effect light may change the measurements considerably.

o   The color temperature can change dramatically with the changes in color of clothes and background.

o   With constant changes in exposure times and lens openings, the ambient light can make the results unpredictable.

Setup

There are lots of examples to be found online, but everything is possible and experimenting is part of the fun. That said, it is advisable to start off with a default setup to learn to know your equipment and the effect of changes in lighting.
