flash bounce Somebody once had a good idea. To soften the light of the flash he mounted a white cap over the flash so most of the ight didn't hit the subject directly, but reached the subject indirectly after it bounced back from walls and ceiling. And he called it a flash bounce. So far, so good.

Manufacturers saw the potential of this easy to produce gimmick and started to sell these for shameless amounts of money as a fixer all for direct flash problems. And people bought them. And people still buy them. Now you find these things constantly in use on most speedlites.

And here reality kicks in:

  • These things eat power;
  • in rooms with colored ceilings or walls they produce nasty color casts in pictures;
  • these things do NOTHING outdoors but light the sky.

Yes they work fine, but only indoors and only satisfactory with white walls and ceilings. In all other circumstances, remove them.
